Obelix (wip)

Some work in progress of the lunchtime project I'm currently working on. It's both practice on modelling stuff I haven't designed and a homage to something that greatly marked my childhood and my strive for being an artist.

Still a lot to do.

Game Pitch

A concept I did for a game pitch in the period between Deadlight and Rime.

Private Detective

Private detective done for the "Character Design Challenge" Facebook page.

Tried to keep the Agatha Christie / Cluedo feel of the flavour text. The briefing:

''An unusual crime has shocked the city last week. The body of a well known aristocrat, Lady Poppington, was found in her bedroom by her housemaid.

Four other people were in the Poppington Mansion at the moment of her death: Philip the butler, George the Gardener, Miss Mimi the Housemaid and Mr. Boringburg, a guest of the victim: none of them heard or noticed anything unusual that night.

The police didn't find any evidence at the crime scene that could lead to the killer nor did they find the murder weapon. The autopsy just revealed that the death was violent, but nothing more.

Lord Poppington (the victim's husband) disappointed by the results of the police investigation, is personally getting in touch with the greatest private detectives to finally solve the mystery of his wife murder''.

Edit: apparently, it won :)

Past stuff, for a project that mellows throughout the years.

Water Well

A prop model I did quite some time ago as a test in the style of the Magicka series, which I love.

I'm including  an alternate self-lit one to only view the diffuse map, the normal-mapped (final) version, and the previous sketch I did, which I based it on.

All textures are 512x512 in this viewer. I tend to prefer Marmoset, but I couldn't embed it here, so you can check it here https://www.artstation.com/artwork/water-well-marmoset.

SELF-LIT (diffuse map only):

ChoW #371 - "Ming, the Explorer"

Haven´t participated in one of those conceptart.org weekly challenges for millennia, so in-between so much 3D modeling at work, I thought the Character of the Week challenge would be nice practice. I tested myself even further by only working on it during lunchtimes at work, that is, 5 sessions of 45 minutes, and left it as-is. Here's the result.

EDIT: Looks like it won. Woot :)

Tuscan Mail Service (final)

Had enough fun with it. After some time without much time for personal stuff, I could dedicate a few lunchtimes and call it a wrap!

Tuscan Mail Service (wip2)

Been busy lately, but I've managed to squeeze some progress here and there during scattered lunchtimes, on top of other stuff I'm working on. Here's a couple more wips, still a lot ahead!

Tuscan Mail Service

Hey, I'm still alive :)

Here's a wip of something I started the other day at lunchtime. To me, it smells of lavender and baked bread in the morning.

Boulder Dash 30th Anniversary Edition

They've unveiled Boulder Dash: 30th Anniversary Edition

How cool is it to get to participate in the reinterpretation of a game you played when you were a kid? I usually don't tend to accept freelance gigs, but I used to play Boulder Dash for hours in my brother's old, rubber-keyed ZX Spectrum, so it was impossible to say no when they asked me to help revamp it. I mainly did concepts, background illustrations and a few mockup 3D models. This one's a rushed merge between one of Rockford's renderings and a background concept I got to rework during a weekend, presumably for the cover of Retro Gamer magazine.

Hopefully I'll get to show more in the future.

SteamDevDays

Ho!

I'm at SteamDevDays in Seattle this week. Lots of cool info to learn from, and we even got a prototype SteamController! If you're around, drop me a line to the mail :)

Career Bucket List

I was thinking last January 5th (during which Spanish kids do their wanted gift lists for the "3 Wise Men") about cool projects I'd die to work in. After some quick brainstorming, I crafted my own "career bucket list".

No matter how much you enjoy your work, there's always lots of projects in your head, and always someone else's projects that make you go 'damn, I'd have loved to work in that one'. This list doesn't mean I wouldn't love to do other, completely different stuff; and in fact the list probably drifts during one's lifetime. It doesn't even mean I have the most remote expectations to fulfill all of them. If just a couple of them ever happened, I'd probably be the happiest guy in town.

So, for the power of wishful thinking, here's a list of the stuff I'd die to ever be a part of!

  • a 3D old-school brawler
  • designing creatures/characters for a child-oriented MMO (unless it's one of those corny Flash games)
  • a "mascot" platformer (sort of like Earthworm Jim, Donkey Kong, Crash Bandicoot, etc)
  • a lighthearted/stylized reinterpretation of a formerly realistic/boring IP
  • anything in a "Torchlight / "Magicka" fashion
  • a wacky, kart-like racing game
  • art-directing a painterly graphic adventure
  • designing the gameplay mechanics for some personal game concept (which seldom match the previously listed ones)
and specific titles:

  • anything "Oddworld" (man, who would I have to kill for that?)
  • anything based in the "Monkey Island" IP (that one's in honor of my 20-year-ago self)
  • a sequel to "No One Lives Forever"

Statue Prop

Testing texture projections on an environment prop. Here's a wip image of the texturing and the actual model. Still some minor seams here and there.

Background WIP

Here's a WIP on a personal thing I'm doing. My aim is to project a 2D drawing on a few meshes to make a painterly 3D scene (like something you'd see in a graphic adventure), but with the ability of being navigated around a bit. I'm aiming for a iOS-friendly polycount and texture size. Still early tests.

Bust texturing test

Photo-texturing test in Zbrush and Photoshop (ZAppLink projections mostly) over a basemesh I did some time ago. The mesh is not anything final, just reusing the lowest subdivision level with some quick UVs.

You can rotate it here.
